Academic Requirements and Timeline
Public Administration Undergraduates: Internships are required for undergraduate students in the School of Public Administration. Prior to graduation, all undergraduate students must complete at least one 180-hour internship for three credit hours but they may intern for 375 hours for more academic credit.
Nonprofit Management Minors: Internships are required for the nonprofit management minor and the national certification from the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance Program. Students may take this for up to three credit hours at 300 hours of internship.
Graduates: Internships are a graduate level general elective. Students may take this for up to three credit hours at 300 hours of internship.
The amount of academic credit awarded is dependent upon the number of hours contracted to the intern in the employing agency/organization.
Spring 2016: The deadline for internship submission and approval has passed.
Summer 2016: Student registration for our summer semester begins in early March and our students last day to approve an internship is May 20th. Our summer semester runs from May 16th to August 5th.
Fall 2016: Student registration for our fall semester begins in early March and our students last day to approve an internship is August 26st. Our fall semester runs from August 22nd to December 12th.

Capacity:
What is your organizational capacity to host an intern in this field (I.E. a need/desire to host an intern, significant workload to support an intern)?
What is your human resource capacity (I.E. someone to supervise and work with the intern)?
What is your financial capacity (I.E. paid or unpaid opportunities)?
What are your physical resources (I.E. workspace, transportation, communications, etc.)?
Intern Position:
What are your learning objectives for the position?
What academic background and experience are you seeking to fill the position with?
What would be the intern’s primary responsibility?
What would the intern be doing on a daily basis?
What professional development can you offer the intern outside of the internship?
Management of intern should include:
- A tour of their proposed workspace and facilities
- An Orientation including information on resources and logistics
- Review of policies and procedures
- Access to resources pertinent to the internship position
- Keep an eye out for professional development opportunities
- Address the how and why of the work
- Provide regular feedback
