By Doug Thomas, SGR Regional Manager, and former City Manager of Lakeland, Florida
The Florida City/County Management Association (FCCMA) and Strategic Government Resources (SGR) are pleased to announce a new collaborative partnership to assist FCCMA members who are Managers in Transition (MIT) following Board approval on November 6, 2015. Working with the Association’s MIT Committee, SGR proposed a Concept Paper which led to the innovative partnership to expand the Association’s offerings to MIT’s through the provision of a variety of professional development opportunities and employment services at no cost to the Association or its members.
SGR’s founder and CEO Ron Holifield stated “I am excited about the new partnership between the FCCMA and SGR to provide real and tangible assistance to Florida Manager’s in Transition. Having been an MIT myself during my City Manager days, this initiative is very personal and important to me and I am incredibly proud of this collaborative approach. It demonstrates FCCMA’s leadership position among professional associations nationwide.” Ken Fields, City Manager of Lake Wales and Co-Chair of FCCMA’s MIT Committee also commented on the new program. “As a former MIT, I know firsthand how helpful the services SGR will be offering our members during a critical part of their careers in local government, and we appreciate the work they will be providing as part of this partnership to help our colleagues find their next career opportunity.”
Having spent close to 35 years in the local government management profession, I have seen the impacts of many close friends and colleagues who have been in transition, and I am pleased and honored to coordinate this new collaborative partnership with our Association. I am confident it will be well received by our membership, and it demonstrates our commitment to our MITs and why FCCMA is one of the leading state associations in the country.
As a member enters MIT status, the FCCMA will notify SGR and the member will be contacted regularly to provide support and information on how to receive the various services associated with the new program. Specifically, any MIT who is also a member of FCCMA will have free access to the following SGR services to assist them in their personal career development:
Job Board
SGR’s Job Board at www.SGRjobs.com reaches over 23,000 job seekers each month, and typically has roughly 1,200 local government job postings. The Job Board includes a subscription option where MITs can receive a daily email notice of new jobs that have been posted in the last 24 hours, for up to three different categories.
Online Learning Management System
MITs will receive a year’s free access to all of the content SGR’s online Learning Management System (LMS) for local governments. The LMS currently includes about 70 courses, with a new one being developed approximately every six weeks. In addition, through a partnership with Emerging Local Government Leaders, all of their webinars (approximately one per month) are also available to LMS subscribers. Of specific interest to MITs may be some of the classes related to writing an effective transmittal letter and participating in an online interview.
Webinars
SGR periodically produces specialty webinars on a wide range of topics of interest to local government officials which are also available at no cost to MITs.
Live Training Classes
SGR trains approximately 1,000 local government employees in live training classes each month, and MITs will be provided free registration to any live class or training event conducted in Florida or any other state, including the Annual SGR Conference.
IOPT Psychometric Leadership Assessment
SGR heavily utilizes the Input-Output-Processing-Template (IOPT) Leadership Assessment in management team and governing body retreats to help take personal and team performance to a higher level. MITs can take the IOPT assessment, followed up with a personal phone counseling session regarding the implications of the assessment for their leadership skills.
Executive Book Briefings
MITs will be provided a free year subscription for SGR’s subscription service, currently in the final stages of development, which will offer on-line executive book briefings of leading edge business books.
