ICMA Practice Area 9: Diversity
Florida’s population is continuing to become more and more diverse in terms of age, race, religion, gender, and numerous other celebrated differences. Local governments, in an effort to ensure their work force represents this changing population, are taking pro-active steps to appropriately create a productive workforce that represents the populations they serve.
Sarasota County, like many local governments, is challenged with increasing its “pool” of diverse employee candidates to fill county positions. In Sarasota County, this recruitment and retention effort has been formalized. Human Resources Director Joanie Whitley will explain their program and discuss the challenges they face and how they have addressed this important initiative.
Mark Durbin, who was recently recognized at the annual FCCMA conference for his service to the profession and for his practice of developing local government talent, will discuss his “tips” and his approach to creating a diverse workforce while serving as City Manager in Kissimmee.
This is a must attend session for all members of FCCMA, regardless of where they are in their career.
