Thanks to organizations like the Sunlight Foundation and Code for America, civic engagement now involves meetups, hackathons, and “datapaloozas,” and there is something for everyone to contribute. With this momentum in the open data and transparency movement, citizens are more empowered to participate in government and take control of the decisions that impact their lives.
311 call centers have given way to digital applications that enable immediate access to resources, and government officials, as well as deeper insight into municipal procedures.
Governments need to be where their citizens are, and that is increasingly on social media. Influential leaders like Corey Booker, Jonathan Reichental, and Brooks Bennett are paving the way for government to become more tech savvy and social on platforms like Facebook and Twitter.
As the next step, Palo Alto, San Francisco, Chicago, and New York are among cities that are acknowledging the power of mobile by moving their 311 portals to smartphone applications. Now, instead of citizens having to pull information from government websites or social media, relevant and personalized information is pushed to them on their smartphones.
