The Florida Local Government Coalition has formed a partnership with the Lou Frey Institute that will focus on civic engagement through technology. Over the coming months, the Coalition’s goal is to harness the talent of higher education and private entrepreneurs to support all of Florida’s local governments as we face the challenges of learning about, implementing, and developing new technologies for citizen education and engagement.
As a kickoff, the Florida Local Government Coalition, the Lou Frey Institute and the Florida League of Cities have joined together to host a day-long symposium on March 10, 2014. This symposium is FREE for Coalition members.
The symposium’s theme is: “From the Chambers to the Cloud: Connecting Citizens and Local Government” It will be held March 10, 2014 from 9:15 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the University of Central Florida’s Pegasus Ballroom. There is no cost for FCCMA members to attend. Lunch will be provided.
Speakers:
- Former U.S. Congressman Lou Frey
- Leadership from Code for America. Since 2010 Code for America has been partnering with local governments across the nation to develop innovative software applications that help engage citizens with their communities and that help local governments make use of their data to deliver public services more effectively and efficiently. Code for America’s work has been supported by Google, the Knight Foundation, ESRI and the Rockefeller Foundation.
- To provide a national perspective on recent developments in technology and engagement, the symposium will include speakers from Boston’s Office of New Urban Mechanics, ICMA’s 311Technical Assistance Program, and Philadelphia’s Chief Data Officer (invited).
- Florida local governments that have already moved to implement some of these new technologies will join us to share their experiences.
- The day will conclude with hands-on demonstrations by applications developers – so symposium participants will be urged to bring their devices to take a test drive.
Registration is required for every attendee. Registration will remain open until Friday, February 28. Coalition members can register online here. Just look for the blue “RSVP for the symposium” hyperlink at the top of the page. Be sure to enter your mailing address on the registration form to receive a free event parking decal in the mail.
